Your car's main control module is commonly referred to as the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and this controls the vehicle operation by using the programmed software to interpret the data received from the multitude of sensors and secondary control modules operating.
The software on the ECU is referred to as the map. The standard map has various parameters for the different control functions, an example is the parameters for when the turbo boost is activated.
Remapping is effectively reading the original map from the ECU and adjusting it by programming changes to the preset parameters then applying the modified map to the ECU.
ECU Remapping is an option for those wanting more power and torque or those seeking maximum fuel economy. A few tweaks can make an enormous difference to the drive experience.
You may have heard that the same thing can be achieved by installing a tuning box which also appears cheaper. Unfortunately tuning boxes vastly vary in refinement with inevitably motley results, they simply lack the accuracy and control of an ECU remap.
They are sold cheaply with big claims of ginormous fuel economy figures or huge BHP and torque increases. In response to this we would advise that without knowing the engine load values and speed data it is impossible to achieve any proper improvements. A generic black box solution will always be a poor substitute for a real proper ECU Remap customised to your car's software.
