It may be a myth that BMW engines are reliable, we have seen an awful lot of BMW engine failures, particularly in the last 5 years including vehicles with full BMW service history.
Obviously there is the well documented timing chain issues which were on BBC Watchdog, we have certainly recovered and repaired an enormous number of BMWs with snapped chains.
As such we offer the ultimate in repairing, rebuilding, replacing and installing BMW engines, we've done it all, from the N47 diesel to very latest S55B30 in the latest M Series.
What we don't do is buy in overpriced units from BMW themselves, we rebuild them in house to the highest standard instead and pass on the enormous savings to you the customer.
When an engine fails, there are three options; Repair, Replace or Dispose. We can help you with the first two!
Repair will involve stripping down your engine and repairing all broken or out of tolerance components.
Replacement will involve installing a reconditioned donor engine to your vehicle, your original engine is usually kept in exchange to lower the cost.
This is more time consuming than simply putting a reconditioned donor engine in as it involves complete strip down and rebuild. The average removal and reinstallation of a BMW engine will take ten hours or so. The average rebuild will take approximately thirty hours or so. There are definitely time and cost implications to this option.
However you are getting an engine that is effectively brand new at the end of the process. If you want to go the whole hog you can install some upgrades in the process as well.
There are different levels of rebuild available, we can just provide the bare minimal to get the vehicle running again if a budget option is required. This might mean only working on the top and not even looking at the bottom for example. Call us to discuss your scenario and we can offer you our advice on the most suitable course of action for your circumstances.
To replace your engine we will be removing your old one and installing an alternative engine block. The replacement engine block is usually exactly that, there are no ancillaries included, these will need separate assessment. The average removal and reinstallation of a BMW engine will take ten hours or so. The block is classed as reconditioned because it will have been checked to a certain standard and new timing components installed and set up.
However you are getting an engine that is effectively a used donor engine from another car. All our replacement engines come with a mileage guarantee and a warranty.
We can usually lessen the cost of the replacement engine by accepting your original engine in exchange. This is usually the quicker option, call us to discuss your scenario and we can offer you our advice on the most suitable course of action for your circumstances.
Sometimes there is a fault on a vehicle that is in reality rather catastrophic. Unfixable doesn't really exist with cars, there is always a repair.
However there are occasions where the cost of the repair(s) required may actually exceed the value of the car. We call this economic viability which is a polite way of saying that really we don't consider your car to be worth spending the money repairing.
This is sad for us to say but please don't be offended if we're blunt with you on the subject, we've got your best interests at heart and don't want to take your hard earned money unfairly.
Dragon Auto Works can also build an engine to your exact requirements.
We use many race components such as Carrillo rods, ARP bolts and JE Pistons.
We've developed M60/M62 engines into 600+ BHP monsters, turboed M64 and S64 units and created 700 BHP straight 6 monsters to name a few!
Whether you want to make a robust BMW engine or want to get serious power we can develop a unique package for you.

What is your car's current book value? Realistically it is necessary to consider economic viability
How much longer are you intending to keep the car? Is it you that will be getting the benefit of a rebuild?
Are there other faults with the car causing problems? Are you going to have further problems of another sort when works are completed?
If you invest the money rebuilding the engine, will you regret it?
Only you can answer these questions. Think it through before deciding what you would like us to do to the car.
Engine repairs tend to start from £1000 for a minor issue.
It all depends what engine your car has as the labour required between engine variants can make a big difference. Similarly the parts costings can be significantly different. Anything performance or specialist will have a greater price tag.
Supply and installation of a donor engine is rarely available for less than £2000, full blown rebuilds are often in the region of £3500.
Once we have assessed your vehicle we will provide you with a written estimate for approval.
